As some of you may or may not know, Facebook on January 11th that they are going to be making changes to Facebook. These changes will directly affect what users see and ultimately will change how businesses market to their audiences.
Mark Zuckerberg came out and said,
"We built Facebook to help people stay connected and bring us closer together with the people that matter to us. That's why we've always put friends and family at the core of the experience. Research shows that strengthening our relationships improves our well-being and happiness.
But recently we've gotten feedback from our community that public content -- posts from businesses, brands and media -- is crowding out the personal moments that lead us to connect more with each other."
These new changes will focus on the user having a better, more meaningful experience on Facebook. This means businesses will have a harder time getting organic reach and will have to start paying to boost posts and run ads.
"As we roll this out, you'll see less public content like posts from businesses, brands, and media. And the public content you see more will be held to the same standard -- it should encourage meaningful interactions between people."
Michael Stelzner from Social Media Examiner has a great podcast and show on what this means for your business. Interactions will be valuable, and according to Michael, comments will be the new share.
Comments show that your content is engaging and that people care enough to leave their thoughts. Don't ask for comments though. Asking for comments will be punished by resulting in less visibility. Now more than ever, businesses need to create high-quality, engaging content that inspires the user to leave their thoughts and feelings in your posts.
Facebook is still a valuable place to reach your audience, but you will be required to work harder and give more value. You can expect a rise in advertising costs, and Mark thinks that time on Facebook will decrease, meaning there will be less spots for advertisements to show. Knowing how to target your audience will be more important than ever!
